How CBD Can Help Veterans Dealing With PTSD

While many Americans express yearlong gratitude to our current and past service members, our nation collectively pauses each November 11th for Veteran’s Day to celebrate these brave men and women and the selfless service they provide. The life they have chosen is a tough one… with consequences that, in many cases, impact their very souls. These service members deserve all of the care that we, as a society, can offer.

Many service members and veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a common psychiatric disorder resulting from a traumatic event. PTSD is manifested through hyperarousal, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and sleep disturbances.

Hemp-based CBD products contain high levels of cannabidiol, or CBD, the compound in cannabis known for its medicinal properties. Not only do they help relieve anxiety and insomnia associated with PTSD, they can also lead to reduction in opioid use, abuse, and overdose. This offers evidence for CBD to be a harm reduction tool.

As I shared in this interview in the Cincinnati Sun, “CBD can be an alternative [to opioids] when clinicians combine it with lower doses of pain medications. With proper guidance, we can help health professionals transfer knowledge of near-prescription-free alternatives to health and wellness.

A study titled Cannabidiol in the Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Case Series in the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), suggested “The results indicate that oral CBD, when given in addition to routine outpatient psychiatric care, may have a beneficial effect for patients with PTSD.”

And according to clinical data published in the Journal of AlteTrnative and Complimentary Medicine, “Administration of oral CBD in addition to routine psychiatric care was associated with PTSD symptom reduction in adults with PTSD.”

It takes some expertise to get the right combination of cannabinoids (including correct percentages of CBD as well as terpenes) to support the therapeutic effects you need. As a registered nurse and founder of both Tulip Tree CBD and Dose.net Medical Cannabis Nurse Consultants, I am committed to helping veterans with the guidance they need and a customized care plan to treat their complex symptoms associated with PTSD.

Tulip Tree CBD products contain ZERO THC providing symptom relief with no “high”.
